Sophia University has launched the Sophia SPRING Project for the doctoral students in the 2024 academic year, funded by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) under its "Support for Pioneering Research Initiated by the Next Generation (SPRING) . ” The aim of this project is to develop human resources who will contribute to science, technology and innovation in Japan, and to develop doctoral human resources who can play an active role not only in academia but also in a wide range of fields. To this end, the university as a whole will provide support to doctoral students in terms of "living expenses", "research expenses" and "career development and training content".

One of the strengths of Sophia University is its unique research environment, with all of its graduate schools located on a single campus in the heart of the city, and it is developing interdisciplinary research that is not limited to specialized fields such as the humanities, social sciences, and science and technology. In addition, its diverse international network of partner institutions in 83 countries and regions, 405 universities (as of December 1, 2024), international organizations, and international joint research consortiums enables students to acquire the knowledge and experience to lead the solution of social issues on the world stage.

Through this program, Sophia University will foster doctoral human resources who can highly practice "for others and with others" to address social issues by cultivating "interdisciplinary" and "internationality" based on a high level of "expertise", and contribute to develop lead science, technology and innovation in Japan on a global scale.
